An Hermes Multicolour Silk Cosmographia Universalis Scarf.
This incredible scarf is inspired by the book "Cosmographia" by Sebastian Munster from 1544. It is the earliest German-language description of the world. He was a cartographer, historian, astronomer, mathematician and scholar of Hebrew. It was translated into many languages and the last edition was published in 1628 long after the author's death. it was one of the most popular and successful books of the 16th century. It was most important in reviving geography in the 16th century. When the artist Jan Bajtlik discovered an original edition in a Polish library he was fascinated by this vision of the world made up of myth and legends. His scarf represents an imaginary landscape and combines architecture, flora and fauna, sea horses, and sea monsters creating a dream like universe populated by extraordinary creatures. A stunning and highly creative piece.
